Notes from the Copenhagen workshop

Words by Jonas Berg

Six people, four benches and one very old radio. A day in the workshop where every piece is made.

Work starts at eight, with coffee and a look at the drawings pinned above the bench.

By the afternoon the floor is covered in shavings and the first chair frame is ready for joinery.

One maker per piece

Every chair, table and cabinet is built by one person from start to finish. Their initials are burned into the underside before it leaves.

(Quote)

“If you made it, you sign it. That rule has never changed.”

End of the day

The last hour is for sweeping, sharpening and writing tomorrow’s list on the board by the door.

Finished pieces rest in the front room for a day before they are wrapped, so the oil can settle and we can look at them once more in daylight.
