A small room, furnished slowly

Words by Mira Halden

A one-bedroom flat, three pieces in two years, and what the owner would still change.

The owners started with a single chair and let the room tell them what was missing.

Two years on, the flat has a table, a sideboard and a lamp, and nothing that was bought in a hurry.

Start with the chair

A chair decides where you sit, where the light should fall and how much space the rest of the room has. It is the piece we usually suggest buying first.

(Quote)

“Nothing in here was bought to fill a gap. Everything was bought because we missed it.”

What they would change

The lamp came last and, looking back, should have come second. The owners say the room only felt finished once the evenings had a warm corner.

Their next piece will be a small bookcase. They have measured the wall three times and are in no hurry.
