Choosing wool for a lounge chair

Words by Jonas Berg

Why we stopped using synthetic bouclé, and what we look for in a wool that has to last twenty years.

A good upholstery wool is dense, springs back when pressed, and pills very slowly. We test every roll before it reaches the chair.

It costs more and it takes longer, but it is the first thing people feel when they sit down.

What we test for

Each roll goes through a rub test, a pilling test and a week on a sample seat in the studio, where everyone is encouraged to sit on it as often as they can.

Where it comes from

Our wool comes from two mills, one in Denmark and one in the north of England, both of which spin and weave on site.

We buy in small batches so the colours stay consistent within a run, and we keep offcuts for repairs and cushion covers.
